Grade five students participate in Local Government Awareness Week

News Article

In recognition of Local Government Awareness Week (LGAW) May 15 to 19, 2023, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) partnered with Similkameen Elementary SecondarySchool in Keremeos to showcase local government through a regional lens.

On Monday, May 15, 2023, RDOS Directors and Communications staff visited grade five students to share information about local governance and some of the programs and services offered by the Regional District. George Bush, Electoral Area “B” Director; Spencer Coyne, RDOS Vice-chair (Princeton Mayor); and Jason Wiebe, RDOS municipal Director (Keremeos Mayor) answered questions and discussed their roles as elected officials on the RDOS Board.

“Local Government Awareness Week is an opportunity to share information about how the Regional District provides services and programs where people live,” said Jason Wiebe, RDOS municipal Director (Keremeos Mayor). “It was fun speaking with students about my role as a mayor and a member of the RDOS Board of Directors.”

On Thursday, May 19, 2023, the students joined the RDOS Board meeting via Webex to learn more about local government. The RDOS Board of Directors answered students’ questions and provided further insights about their roles and responsibilities.
