RDOS receives input on the Solid Waste Management Plan
News ArticleINFORMATION RELEASE
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is updating its Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP). The SWMP reflects a long-term vision for how the RDOS will manage solid waste over the next decade. Once approved by the Ministry of Environment and Parks, the new plan will replace the previous 2012 SWMP.
In early 2025, the RDOS invited residents, businesses, and Indigenous communities to share their views on waste management. An online survey received almost 400 responses, and five participants each won $100 gift cards. The survey results were used by the Public and Technical Advisory Committees to inform the priorities and strategies included in the SWMP. The RDOS thanks all participants for their input and continued support in shaping a sustainable future for the region.
Key findings
Survey results show strong community support for existing waste management services, with over 90% of respondents expressing satisfaction with curbside collection for garbage, recycling, and yard waste. Most waste management facilities also received satisfaction ratings above 80%. While current services are well regarded, residents indicated interest in expanding options. One-third of respondents support introducing food scraps collection, and more than 15% would like the curbside recycling program to include additional materials such as glass, plastic bags, wrappers, and Styrofoam. Nearly 10% of respondents requested more frequent yard waste collection or an extended season.
“The role of the RDOS is to determine which waste reduction and diversion programs are feasible for the region, and how to optimize disposal efficiency across the solid waste system,” said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS chair. The participation of Indigenous communities, rural and municipal residents, and businesses will contribute to a successful initiative.”
The Let’s Talk less trash consultation process will continue through early 2026, providing further opportunities to comment on the programs and services that will manage waste for the next decade.
