The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) are aware of a significant smoke column visible in the South Okanagan and Similkameen valleys, including the Osoyoos and Chopaka areas.

The smoke is originating from the Sinlahekin Fire, located south of the Canada-United States border in Washington State.

LSIB Emergency Management, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the RDOS Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), and partner agencies are actively monitoring the situation and remain in direct contact with wildfire officials managing the incident. The large smoke column is the result of current weather conditions, winds, fuel conditions, and fire behaviour within the fire area.

At this time, there is no immediate threat to communities on the Canadian side of the border. Should conditions change or any risk to residents be identified, affected communities will be notified immediately.
