Christie Memorial Park seasonal maintenance, rototilling Short-rayed Alkali Aster
News ArticleINFORMATION RELEASE
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) will conduct routine maintenance at Christie Memorial Park in Okanagan Falls (Electoral Area “D”) on Thursday, October 30, 2025. This work includes rototilling the beach area using a tractor-mounted rototiller.
Rototilling is part of ongoing efforts by the RDOS to manage invasive and competitive plant species and maintain the ecological integrity of the site. This activity follows best management practices developed in partnership with federal and provincial biologists and is consistent with the recovery strategy for species at risk. Protected plants, including the Short-rayed Alkali Aster, are not removed during the rototilling process.
About the Short-rayed Alkali Aster
The Short-rayed Alkali Aster is a small annual herb that grows between 5 cm and 60 cm, sometimes with multiple branches. Its flower heads feature a yellow centre surrounded by white or pink petals. This species typically flowers in August and is not visible during spring or fall maintenance periods.
Stewardship and best practices
While the original stewardship agreement for Christie Memorial Park has expired, the RDOS continues to follow the Operational Best Management Practices outlined in that agreement. These practices ensure maintenance activities do not harm critical habitat and support long-term conservation goals.
Key measures include:
- Avoiding disturbance in designated Low Impact Zones during the growing season (May - October 31)
- Conducting rototilling only during approved periods (spring and fall) to mimic natural disturbance and control invasive species
- Supporting annual monitoring and collaboration with provincial and federal agencies
The RDOS remains committed to protecting sensitive habitats while providing safe and enjoyable public spaces.
