Recycling Tool Kits for Business, Multi-Family and Events

News Article

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), along with GreenStep Solutions, created new resources to better support small businesses, apartments and event hosts in managing recycling efforts. How-to guides, videos, and checklists for setting up and managing successful recycling programs are all available on the RDOS website. Get an overview of the information available in the tool kits by watching a short video. RDOS staff support these free resources and the Solid Waste Team is available to work with businesses, apartments and event organizers on program set up and questions.

Studies examining waste content have shown that businesses, apartments, and events place many recyclable materials such as recyclable paper, cardboard, metal, and plastics into the garbage.

The high costs of landfilling means recycling programs are not only beneficial in helping the environment but often help save money in the process and conserves landfill space.

The tool kits were developed following best practices used locally and across Canada. The RDOS has worked with GreenStep Solutions for the last four years conducting public consultation and onsite waste audits. Work included meeting with apartment and condo owners, small businesses, business associations, event organizers, and local governments. Consultation identified major barriers to better recycling programs, including a lack of information on what is recyclable and how to build and manage a successful program.
