Volunteer Opportunities

Building healthy and cohesive communties in the South Okanagan-Similkameen region is an essential part of the programs and services offered by the RDOS. And it is volunteers who are playing a critical role in making this possible.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

The RDOS offers various inclusive volunteer opportunities within areas such as Parks & Recreation and Emergency Management. Individuals are encouraged to share their skills, support others and be part of their community.

Community Champions

Community Champions

The Community Champions program identifies key people within their communities who are able to share accurate and timely information from the RDOS with local residents in a reliable and consistent manner.

For example, in the event of an important notice such as a boil water advisory or emergency alert to prepare for flooding, the RDOS would contact the Community Champion to share the message where people in their community will be able to receive it. This could be by any combination of phone tree, posting a paper notice on a public bulletin board, emailing association groups, posting on a community Facebook page, or speaking directly with coffee groups.

Although Community Champions do not speak on behalf of the RDOS or its Board of Directors, they do have their finger on the pulse of their communities and genuinely want to keep residents informed about events that affect where they live, work, and play.

General Recreation

Volunteer for a multitude of programs such as art, basketball, climbing wall, soccer, skating programs, and so much more. If you have a specific interest or passion, call 250-490-4208 and staff will work with you to find a suitable placement.

Youth Volunteers and The Young Leaders Program

YLP members are students with a good community initiative, involvement, and leadership qualities. The program's purpose is to provide the students with a place to meet and learn skills for the future, such as First Aid and Food Safe, but ultimately it is to have fun and build community events.

Youth volunteers support the recreation team by providing assistance, input, and sharing their talents to increase the quality of the recreation programs.  It is also a great way to earn those graduation volunteer hours! Informed and parental consent is required.
