INFORMATION RELEASE

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Recreation team is pleased to share several service updates, including the success of the Prescribed Recreation pilot program, facility improvements, and community initiatives.

Prescribed Recreation pilot program concludes, full-year trial proposed for 2026

The RDOS is concluding its Prescribed Recreation pilot program and will be proposing a full-year trial for 2026. This innovative initiative, supported by local health practitioners, aims to enhance community health and wellness by connecting individuals with recreation services that support health goals and well-being.

“Prescribed recreation is a proactive and inclusive approach that delivers real economic and social value,” said Andy Foster, RDOS manager of recreation and facilities. “By improving community health, we can ease pressure on our health care system and build stronger, more resilient communities.”

In 2024, the RDOS offered free access to the Similkameen Community Pool for older adults and launched a rehabilitation program in partnership with a physiotherapist. In 2025, the program expanded to include 50 prescriptions distributed to health professionals, enabling residents to access activities such as swimming, yoga, gym sessions, and chair exercises.

“Prescribed recreation is about more than physical activity; it’s about preventative health, community connection, and supporting mental wellness,” said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS chair. “The RDOS is proud to be part of a movement that promotes equity, inclusion, and healthier communities.”

More than 20 prescriptions were used during the trial, with participants reporting improved well-being and increased awareness of local recreation services. RDOS recreation staff will present the full-year trial proposal to the RDOS Board of Directors as a strategic priority for 2026, and an exploration of fee assistance programs.

Facility enhancements and infrastructure projects

The Similkameen Recreation Centre continues to invest in long-term improvements:

  • Landscape rejuvenation project: The multi-year landscape project is nearing a major milestone. Underground services, a paved parking lot, tree and ground cover planting, and lighting installation for the accessible pathway are all complete. The RDOS extends its gratitude to community members who generously donated trees to support the project.
  • Mural expansion: Following the completion of the initial mural earlier this year, work is underway to expand the artwork around the building before winter weather arrives. The RDOS extends its appreciation to the Lower Similkameen Community Services Society (LSCSS), whose generous donation made the initial mural possible.
  • Court resurfacing: The multi-use and squash courts are currently being refinished to enhance playability and safety.
  • Roof repairs: Maintenance work has been completed above the ice rink refrigeration plant and the main entrance.
  • Facility painting: The bowling alley, concessions area, and vestibule have all received fresh coats of paint.
  • Transit access: As of September, the Similkameen Recreation Centre is now a designated bus stop for Route 50, providing a convenient and accessible transit option for residents in north Keremeos. Ample parking is available for those wishing to park and ride to Penticton for appointments and services.
  • Accessibility improvements: The RDOS has successfully applied for a grant to support the installation of accessible entrance doors at the recreation centre. Installation is scheduled for early 2026.

Community engagement and recognition

  • The Recreation Department participated in the Similkameen Sizzle festival with the Physical Activity Trailer (PAT), coinciding with the final day of the extended seasonal pool operations, marking the first time the pool remained open this late into the season.
  • A heartfelt thank you goes out to Darrell Taylor, who has contributed significantly to the recreation community, including serving as chair of the Recreation Commission and leading the climbing wall program for many years. A recognition piece will be shared soon to honour both Darrell and their spouse, Rose Koehler, for their dedication and service.
