National Indigenous Peoples Day – 30th Anniversary: Continuing the path of learning and reconciliation
News ArticleINFORMATION RELEASE
June 21, 2026, marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Observed on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, this day holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous Peoples. It is a time to recognize, celebrate, and honour the diverse histories, cultures, languages, knowledge systems, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
For generations, many Indigenous communities have gathered on or around the solstice as a time of renewal, connection, and celebration. Today, National Indigenous Peoples Day carries an important shared responsibility for all of us to learn, reflect, and come together in a spirit of respect, understanding, and unity. It is an opportunity to recognize that we are all connected and that meaningful reconciliation is built through learning from one another and strengthening relationships.
June is also National Indigenous History Month in Canada. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) encourages residents to deepen their understanding of the histories, cultures, and ongoing contributions of the syilx Okanagan and sməlqmíx Peoples, as well as First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities across the country.
Indigenous teachings remind us of the importance of reciprocity: giving back and caring for the world around us. Respecting the land is not only about stewardship, but about recognizing our shared responsibility to protect and sustain it for future generations. This relationship is rooted in balance, respect, and connection, and it is something we can all learn from as we move forward together.
“National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour Indigenous cultures and reflect on our shared path forward,” said RDOS Chair Mark Pendergraft. “We value our relationships with First Nation communities and are committed to working together with respect and understanding.”
The RDOS supports ongoing learning, listening, and relationship-building with Indigenous communities. Residents are encouraged to take part by attending local events, exploring educational resources, and reflecting on how each of us can contribute to stronger, more respectful, and more inclusive communities.
