INFORMATION RELEASE

In celebration of Local Government Awareness Week (LGAW), May 12 to 18, 2024, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is facilitating learning opportunities for elementary school students in Electoral Area “E” (Naramata) and Electoral Area “D” (Okanagan Falls).

On Tuesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 16, 2024, RDOS communications staff will visit students to discuss how local governments serve communities and the role of elected officials. Matt Taylor, Electoral Area “D” Director and Adrienne Fedrigo, Electoral Area “E” Director will attend in their respective communities to answer questions about their roles in local government.

LGAW is an annual initiative and is an opportunity to answer questions, engage residents, and promote civic awareness. The theme for LGAW 2024 is “Infrastructure.” Within the Regional District, there are several significant infrastructures that support residents in local communities including water and sewer systems, recreation facilities, and garbage and recycling services.

LGAW also includes Asset Management Awareness Day on May 15, 2024. Proper asset management practices are essential for local governments to help provide better services for communities while also considering the needs of future generations. To learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the Regional District, including services, taxation, and governance structure, watch the RDOS overview video on the RDOS YouTube channel.
