RDOS Regional Reflections

News Article

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is a federation consisting of nine electoral areas and six municipalities. Every four years the RDOS conducts general local elections to elect a director to represent each of its electoral areas.

There are two categories of electors in local government elections; Resident Electors and Non-Resident Electors.

Resident Electors
If you are 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, have resided in British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day and you live in the Electoral Area, you are considered a resident elector.  You do not need to own property.

Non-resident Property Electors
If you own property in the electoral area in which you wish to vote and live elsewhere in BC, you may be eligible to vote as a non-resident property elector. A non-resident property elector is someone who is 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day, owns property in the Electoral Area, but does not reside in the Electoral Area.  If you qualify as a resident elector in an electoral area, you may not vote as a non-resident property elector in the same electoral area.

A non-resident property elector may vote on behalf of one property only and must complete the Non-Resident Property Elector Declaration. If more than one person owns the property, only one owner may register, and that person must have the written consent of a majority of the other owners. Non-resident Property Elector Declaration and Non-Resident Property Elector Consent forms can be found at rdosregionalconnections.ca

Property Registered in a Company’s Name
A corporation is not entitled to vote on behalf of a property it owns. However, a person residing at the property may be eligible to vote as a resident elector.

Mail Ballot Voting
Voters in the RDOS are eligible to vote using a mail ballot. To receive a mail ballot package you must first submit a Mail Ballot Application and two pieces of identification to the Regional District office. Non-resident property electors must also complete Non-Resident Property Elector Application and Non-Resident Property Elector Consent forms to accompany the mail ballot application. Mail ballot packages will be processed after ballots are printed in mid-September. For further information, please visit rdosregionalconnections.ca.
